The Nazi railroad gun that was a pain in the ass in Anzio. After one of its shells broke a liberty ship in half, the allied forces parked their ships just out of Annie's range (40 miles) and relied on DUKW's to ferry troops and supplies from the ships to the beaches. My grandpa made it further inland when the Germans started shelling the beach. He said that you could hear it when the gun fired and the sonic booms from when the shells went overhead. He described the noise of the shells as freight trains flying through the sky. Fortunately, a P51 spotted the gun as it was firing and landed a bomb right behind it destroying the tracks so that it could not be put back into the tunnel. It was captured shortly afterwards and now resides at Fort Lee, Virginia.

Fascinating story. I had read about the guns that they deployed. Never heard any story's. The fact it is here at Fort Hood is even better. Thanks.

My grandfather also told me about the sound of them firing ... And of being so tired, that he kept falling asleep while standing against a tree between shots

IIRC, that photo is from when it was located at the (former) Army Armament Museum @ Aberdeen Proving Ground. I walked through that museum and the grounds surrounding it littered with allied and opposition armament a few times - amazing a stuff. Have you been to the museum since it was relocated to Fort Lee?

The Anzio artillery gun was an impressive piece...

BTW, I can't imagine ferrying to land from over the horizon in a DUKW. I have ridden in a DUKW a few times, and they are sitting-duck-slow. 5.5 knots (just over 6 mph) on water. That's more than 2 hours over the horizon. Heck, even the AAV can do about 7 knots (more than 8 mph) in the water. Some day they'll get the EFV worked out - a full planing hull light armored tank that can do almost 29 mph across the water.
